The NDP is pressing the Trudeau government to participate in nuclear disarmament talks, the ultimate goal of which is a world without nuclear weapons. The PM has said that the talks are "sort of useless" because the world's nuclear powers won't be there. He's right. No one likes nuclear weapons. But it is worth remembering that NATO remains a nuclear first-strike power (a policy that even Obama would not reverse) and that the nuclear deterrent (mutual assured destruction) has done much to stabilize global geo-politics since 1945. A ban on nukes is a noble dream, but only non-proliferation is an achievable goal, at least for now.
