Canada presently ranks tenth for socio-economic well-being among the 188 countries with a U.N. Human-Development-Index ranking. Even better news is that the rest of the world is catching up. "[W]e are witnessing the greatest improvement in global living standards ever to take place," writes Swedish historian Johan Norberg. "Poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy, child labour and infant mortality are falling faster than at any other time in human history. The risk that any individual will be exposed to war, die in a natural disaster, or be subjected to dictatorship has become smaller than in any other epoch." The future is bright. Happy Canada Day.
