On Omar Khadr

The acrimonious fall-out from Omar Khadr's $10.5-million settlement with the Canadian government should surprise no one. The "child soldier" vs. "terrorist" debate has been polarized since Canadians learned that Khadr would be tried in the U.S. for murder—fueled by polemics on both sides, and by statements from partisans of all stripes. Some observers have changed their minds about Khadr but most have not, demonstrating that the culture wars Canadians are mostly happy to leave to their American friends can migrate. Omar Khadr is about to become a footnote—except in Ottawa, where he may well cost Justin Trudeau the 2019 federal election.
