Jaws author Peter Benchley took a lot of flak in the 1970s, both for terrorizing anyone who ever thought about swimming in the ocean and for demonizing the great white. Shark attacks on humans are rare but they remain a staple of tabloid journalism and Hollywood horror. These days, thanks to Benchley and other marine conservationists, sharks are themselves the victims—of pollution, poachers and misunderstanding. This summer a female great white nicknamed Pumpkin is cruising the waters of Chéverie, NS, dining on seals and delighting the locals. It's finally safe to go back in the water.
